Sea Burial Service

Sea burial is a practice of dispersing cremated remains into the sea. Many individuals choose sea burials as the sea provides a sense of calm and peace. Many also see sea burial as a way of returning to Mother Nature.

Sea burial is a more economical alternative to burial and columbarium placement, and some people would also prefer not to trouble their descendants to visit the columbarium and burial grounds every year. Traditional methods of sea burial involve wrapping the cremated remains in white or red cloth, and slowly scattering them at sea, by the family members. Today, biodegradable urns are available for family members to just scatter a few pieces of the cremated remains and then placing the biodegradable urn into the sea, together with the rest of the cremated remains.

The Maritime Port Authority (MPA) has designated a site located about 1.5 nautical miles (2.8 km) south of Pulau Semakau where ash scattering at sea can be conducted. This can be done daily, from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. For more information, you can contact the MPA’s Port Marine Safety Control Centre at 6325 2488.

Inland Ash Scattering (IAS)

The Inland Ash Scattering was introduced by The National Environment Agency on 17 May 2021 as an additional option for the management of cremated ashes in Singapore aside from the existing options of storing at home, storing in columbaria niches, or scattering at sea (sea burial).

The ash scattering garden is located at the Choa Chu Kang Cemetery Complex and is a secular facility open to all religious faiths.
